WALLA and Friends January Movie

WALLA and Friends will present the movie, Potiche, on January 9 at the West Lafayette Library at 6:45.
It is a French comedy centering around Susanne Pujol, played by Catherine Deneuve. She is a typical trophy wife (potiche) and seems perfect as a wife and mother until life changes and she becomes a temporary CEO and takes up with a former lover. The public is welcome to attend and as always, attendance and popcorn is free.
Please note: This movie is rated R, for mature audiences only.

Trip planned for January 27

WALLA will be taking a day- trip to Radio Station WBAA, C-Span archives, and Route 66 Diner on January 27. Please reserve the date, if this sounds like a trip you would be interested in attending. The cost for the day is $20 with participants purchasing their own lunch.One more stop may be added, but details have yet to be finalized. Further information will be forthcoming. December 12 Movie at West Lafayette Library


A Friends of the Library-WALLA Monday Night Movie will be held on December 12, at 6:45 at the West Lafayette Library. The film to be shown is, Waking Sleeping Beauty. This film deals with the excellence of Walt Disney films in the decade (1984-1994). As always, the movie is open to the public and is free. Come and enjoy the movie and free popcorn.

Plan Ahead for the Winter Getaway Trip

The Winter Getaway is scheduled for February 29, March 1, and 2, 2012 at McCormick's Creek State Park. This year's film series will be based on the movie career of Barbara Stanwyck with three films and discussions that include; The Lady Eve, Double Indemnity and The Furie.

Two nights lodging, bus and films are included in the cost of the following choices:
Private room – 1 Queen bed $116 each
Double room - couple - 2 Queen beds $176 couple
Double room - shared - 2 Queen beds $88 each
Meals at the Inn are self-pay

WALLA and Friends Movie


The award winning movie,Gosford Park,will be presented at the West Lafayette Library on November 14 at 6:45. The movie is a mystery/comedy centered around a murder that occurs at the mansion of a wealthy British couple whose guests were invited for a weekend of hunting and relaxation. The guests' and the servants' perspectives are explored while attempting to solve the crime. As always, the movie and popcorn are free and the invitation to attend is open to the public. We hope to see you at the movie!

Reminder to Register for Fall Classes

Registration for fall classes is in full swing. Registration ends Friday October 7.
Class lists and registration forms are available at the WALLA office on the second floor of the Morton Center, 222 North Chauncey Avenue, West Lafayette, or by calling Mary Gardner at 765 494-5760 or 800 359-2968. The list of classes may be viewed online under the tab, "classes."
Registration cannot be completed online. Classes will be held from October 17 to November 10. A $60 fee allows you to register for up to 12 clases. There are 26 classes , 16 of which are mini courses.

October 10, Movie

Shall We Dansu? will be presented by WALLA and Friends at the West Lafayette Library at 6:45 on Monday, October 10. The 1996 movie was adapted for American audiences in 2004 as Shall We Dance? The movie is rated PG 13 and runs 136 minutes. The movie is open to the public and, as always, it is free.

Monday Night Movie Moved to Second Monday of the Month

WALLA and Friends will present the movie, The Conspirator on Monday, September 12, at 6:45 p.m. at the West Lafayette Public Library. In The Conspirator (2010), director Robert Redford presents the nineteenth-century military trial that held a dazed and grieving nation spellbound for well over a month. The trial in question was that of Mary Surratt, the only woman accused of participating in the plot to assassinate President Abraham Lincoln.

As always, the movie is free and the public is encouraged to attend. Please note the September 12 date which is consistent with WALLA and Friends new format of movies on the second Monday of the month.

WALLA and The League of Women Voters will present a mayoral forum for public attendance on
Wednesday, September 14, 2011 at the Morton Community Center, 222 N. Chauncey, West Lafayette In from 7-9 pm.

Jeff Smith, WLFI-TV, Channel l8, News Director will be the moderator
Timekeepers will be provided by League of Women Voters.
Questions from the audience will be submitted on 3 x5 cards to be submitted for responses from mayoral candidates.

WALLA FALL CLASSES TO BE ANNOUNCED

Fall classes will be announced at the annual picnic at Columbian Park, on August 18 at 5 p.m.
Cost is $9.00 for a dinner of fried chicken, potato salad, veggie tray, bread, cookie and beverage.
In addition to enjoying dinner with friends, there will be the annual announcement of upcoming classes and an overview presentation. Brochures will be distributed for early sign-up.

Come Share The Fun of Viewing "Ponyo"

On June 20, WALLA and Friends will present the movie "Ponyo," at the West Lafayette Library. It is a Disney animated film, produced and directed by Hayao Miyazakii that has entertained and delighted adults as well as children. Roger Ebert uses the word, “magical” to describe the Japanese film based on "The Little Mermaid." It is a story about Sosuke, a 5-year-old, who finds a goldfish in a jar; Ponyo. He frees the fish and the fish heals Sosuke’s finger wound. Through that act, Ponyo gains the ability to change between being a fish or a human. Come share in this delightful movie. As always, it is open to the public and there is no charge.

Sign up by July 5 for the July 14 Delphi Trip

A tour of the Wabash and Erie Canal in Delphi is planned for Thursday, July 14. Participants will ride on a replica of a century old canal boat, pedal a surrey or hike on tow paths, visit the Delphi Opera House and Gallery and the Historical Museum. The trip will include bus transportation and a catered lunch. The bus will leave from Morton Center at 9:30 a.m. and return around 4:30. The cost is $40 ea. Join Us For The June WALLA and Friends Film

June’s free WALLA and Friends movie is O Brother, Where Art Thou? based on Homer's "The Odyssey,” and set in the 1930's Depression-era South

It is the first in the Summer Film Series "Great Adaptations: From Page to Screen." It will be shown at the West Lafayette Public Library at 6:45 on June 6. As always, anyone interested may attend.

The deadline to sign up for the Armchair Travel on the Road trip is May 2. The trip will take place Tuesday June 7-Thursday June 9, 2011. Highlights of the trip will be the Ghyslain Chocolate Factory tour and lunch, tour of the Gene Stratton-Porter State Historic Sit, Overnight accomodations in Auburn, Auburn-Cord Dusenberg Museum, Lakeside lunch in LaGrange, Plyley's Candy Factory, Amish shops, overnight accommodations at Das Dutchman Essenhaus with a Das Dutchman Essenhaus family-style dinnter, Master Gardner tour of Quilt Gardens in Amish country and lunch at Amish Farm. May 2 Movie

WALLA and Friends will host the movie, Only When I Dance at the West Lafayette Public Library at 6:45 p.m. on Monday, May 2. It is a movie about two Brazilian teenagers whose passion and talent for ballet also offers them potential for rising out of the slums of Rio de Janeiro. The film showing and discussion are free and open to the public.

Benefit Dart Tournament

A benefit dart tournament to help defray medical expenses of Randy Nelson, WALLA President, is being held at the Lafayette Moose Lodge 1529, 3601 Union Street in Lafayette. Randy is currently battling lung cancer. The Blind Draw Double Elimination tournament will take place April 30. Sign up is at 5:30 with throwing at 6:30. Awards will be presented to the top 3 winners. There will also be open auctions, 50/50 and children activities planned. There is a $5.00 registration fee.

2011 Annual Meeting and Luncheon

WALLA's 2011 Annual Meeting and Luncheon will take place Thursday, April 28 from 11a.m. - 2p.m. at The Trails, 325 Burnett Road, West Lafayette. The guest speaker will be Katie Bunder, Director of Food Finders. Cost for the luncheon is $16.00 per person. Reservation deadline is April 19. Reservations can be made through Gail Beck. April 4 WALLA and Friends Film

WALLA and Friends will present the film, “The Secret in Their Eyes,” at the West Lafayette Public Library on Monday, April 4, at 6:45. This 2010 Academy Award winner is subtitled in English and is for mature audiences only. In this movie, Benjamin Esposito, retires and draws on his former court employee experience by writing a novel about an investigation into the rape and murder of a young woman. The film is free and open to the mature public.

March 29 and April 6 Luncheons

Tuesday, March 29, starting at 11:45, Stanton Lambert, Executive Director of the Wabash River Enhancement Corporation, will give a presentation on the recently completed corridor master plans for the Lafayette/West Lafayette urban section and the Tippecanoe County rural section of the Wabash River Corridor. He will also provide a brief overview of enhancement of the Wabash River corridor. This luncheon program will take place in the Morton Community Center. Luncheon cost is $9 and reservations can be made with Mary Gardner or Gail Beck until the Thursday prior to the luncheon.

Another Special Event Box Lunch will be held on Wednesday, April 6,at 11:45 at Morton Community Center. Coleen Hamrick, CASA Director,will speak about "How Advocates Assist Abused and Neglected Children.” CASA volunteers are community volunteers who are trained to speak up for the rights of children. Come learn about the needs in our community and how Tippecanoe County CASA volunteers make an impact on our community's most vulnerable children. Cost to purchase a box lunch is $9 and reservations can be made with Mary Gardner or Gail Beck until the Thursday prior to the luncheon.

Luncheon on March 24

Township Government: What It Is and Why It Matters will be presented Thursday, March 24, 2011 at 11:45 a.m. at the Morton Community Center auditorium. This presentation is co-sponsored by the League of Women Voters of Greater Lafayette with WALLA. Township structure, trustee duties and the financial picture in Tippecanoe County's thirteen townships will be discussed. The League will share conclusions and recommendations based on an eighteen-month study of township government.

This will be a brown bag lunch hour presentation. Hot drinks will be available. Free and open to the public.

Free Lecture of Interest at Purdue

Purdue's Department of History's Stover Lecture Series is presenting

Art Show

March 1-April 15 2011 will be an art show, displayed in
various areas of the West Lafayette Public Library.
WALLA members are encouraged to bring their artwork to the
library anytime during library hours, March 1 – March 5, 2011.
This year’s show will feature artwork by the WALLA community
in a wide range of media including wood turnings and carvings,
fabric art, pastels, oils, photography, glass, and pottery.
A reception introducing the art show will be held at the library
on Monday, March 7, 2011, at 6:00 p.m.,
before the WALLA Film & Friends movie,
"Iron Jawed Angels." The movie will begin at 6:45

Pizza Party and Announcement of Spring Classes

February 17 at 11:45 in the multi-purpose room of the Morton Center will be the Annual Pizza Party and announcement of Spring Classes. The cost is $9.00 a person. Included will be Arni's Pizza, a Jr. salad and cold, (not hot) drinks. To sign up, see the newsletter link for contact information or to print off a registration form.

The spring classes will take place March 21 to April 14. Details about the classes will be presented at the pizza party and brochures with times, description and sign up information will be available.
