Happy Holidays

With the arrival of the holidays there are many out of the ordinary days. We hope you will enjoy the holidays in a variety of ways. Tuck in your thoughts some out of the ordinary days scheduled for the future.
January 3 will be the WALLA and Friends movie at 6:45 at the West Lafayette Library.

January 17 at the People's Brewing on 9th St. will be a session on beer brewing, as well as on Jan. 24 at Chumley's in Lafayette. Time is from 3 to 5 and cost is $25.00 for the two sessions. See the newsletter link for more details

February 22, 23 and 24 is the Winter Getaway to McCormick's Creek State Park. See the newsletter link for more details.

Put on your calendars the annual pizza party on Feb 17 where Spring classes will be announced and which will occur March 21 -April 14.

A Holiday Event

A trip to Beef and Boards, featuring a buffet lunch and matinee performance of the musical version Dickens' "Christmas Carol" will take place December 6. The cost is $45 and includes bus transportation, lunch and show. The deadline to sign up is November 7. Contact Gail Beck for more information.

Classes In Session

The WALLA Fall 2010 Session of classes has begun. Learning and sharing seems to be plentiful, as well as socialization and laughter. If you are among those attending, please make sure that you give attention to the evaluation forms that should be turned in at the end of the session. They will be helpful for planning future sessions. We are happy to see such wonderful attendance and hope all who attend will find enlightenment and joy from this session. Please share your WALLA experience with your friends who may wish to join us next session. If you were not able to be a part of this session, we hope to see you in the future.

WALLA FALL CLASSES ANNOUNCED

Fall Classes begin October 18. The brochure, listing the classes, descriptions and times, is available by calling the WALLA office at 765 746 2006 or by stopping by the Wabash Area Lifetime Learning office on the second floor of the Morton Center. The brochure is also posted on the website and can be downloaded in its entirety. Registration is not available online and must be completed by October 8.

Indiana State Legislative Forum

Wabash Area Lifetime Learning Association and the League of Women Voters are again presenting the Indiana State Legislative Candidates Forum, September 15 from 7-9 p.m in the Multi-purpose Room of the Morton Community Center. Jeff Smith, of Channel 18 News, will moderate and explain forum procedure. State Senate candidates in District 22; Ron Alting and Michael Oxenrider, State Representative candidates for District 27; Sheila Klinker and Donn Brown, and State Representative candidates for District 25; Randy Truitt and Paul Roales, as well as Tim Brown candidate for State Representative in District 41 will participate.

Picnic in the Park


WALLA’s annual picnic will be held Thursday August 19 at 5 p.m. at Columbian Park, Blue Shelter #5. Reserve the date for an enjoyable picnic dinner of fried chicken, potato salad, veggie tray, bread, cookie and beverage. Fall session brochures will also be distributed at the picnic for early sign-up. Reserve by August 12 with a $9.00 check payable to WALLA and sent to Gail Beck.

History, Art, and Popcorn in Zionsville & Edinburgh, July 27, 2010

The WALLA Program Committee has planned a fun summer bus trip for Tuesday, July 27.

You'll ride in an air-conditioned bus to two interesting Indiana towns: Zionsville and Edinburgh. The bus will leave Morton Center at 8:30 a.m. and will return at approximately 5:45 p.m.

The cost is $65 per person which includes transportation, lunch, entrance fees, and a bottle of chilled water.

Take along a bag for souvenirs, art and antiques, gourmet chocolates, amazing popcorn, and whatever else may strike your fancy.

Shady Side of Lafayette Tour, May 20, 2010


A WALLA bus tour to former Lafayette-area sites of gaming, gambling, speakeasies, "Ladies of the Evening", and a possible Dillinger hangout will depart from Morton Community Center at 9:30 A.M. on Thursday, May 20th .

Lunch will be at one of the known gambling sites. There will also be a visit to the Wildcat Creek Winery for a short tour and tasting.

The cost of this day-long bus tour, led by Paula Woods, is $35 per person; lunch is included.

Send a check for your reservation made out to WALLA to Paula Woods, 833 North Chauncey Avenue, West Lafayette, IN 47906. Please indicate your lunch choice from the following: salad with garlic bread, cheeseburger, or club sandwich.

Old Railroads! Old Farms! Another WALLA Adventure!, June 8 - June 10, 2010

A spring bus trip to Illinois and Wisconsin is being offered by the WALLA Programming Committee. A few of the sites the group will visit: Illinois railroad museum and parks, Illinois-Michigan canal, Old World Wisconsin State Park depicting Danish, Finnish, German, Norwegian and African vintage farms, Tempel Lippizan stables in Illinois, and the Monon Connection railroad museum in Monon, Indiana.

We will stay at the Harbor Shores Hotel in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin. Restaurants on the itinerary include: Chapin's Restaurant in Morris, Illinois, Mader's Famous German Restaurant in Milwaukee, and the Whistlestop Restaurant in Monon, Indiana.

The bus will leave from Morton Center on Tuesday, June 8 and return to West Lafayette, Wednesday, June 10. The cost for this WALLA adventure is $300 per person for double occupancy (add $78 for single supplement). This includes transportation, meals, and admissions. The registration deadline is May 1. WALLA Annual Meeting and Luncheon, April 22, 2010

See you on April 22, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. for the 2010 WALLA Annual Meeting Luncheon at the Trails Banquet Hall in Battleground, Indiana.

Come early to socialize. The buffet will be served beginning around 11:45 a.m. The cost is $16.00 per person.

Following the buffet lunch and always-entertaining business meeting, there will be a presentation by our guest speaker, West Lafayette Mayor, John Dennis.

Third Annual WALLA Art Exhibit, April 2010

WALLA artists, potters, photographers, woodworkers, etc. !!!

Submit your artwork for the WALLA Art Exhibit which will be displayed at the West Lafayette Public Library throughout the month of April. Blythe Lee or Nancy Hartman at the library will accept your pieces between March 25 to March 30. Two-dimensional items must be ready to hang.

Meet the "Church Basement Ladies" with WALLA friends, February 27

WALLA is organizing a group event to attend the musical comedy, Church Basement Ladies, Saturday, February 27, 2:30 P.M. at Long Theater. A professional touring company will be performing and the main floor tickets are $27.00.

Pizza Party and Introduction of Spring Classes, February 18

The Pizza Party, sponsored by the Curriculum Committee, will be in the Morton Community Center's All-Purpose Room, Thursday, February 18 at 11:45 A.M. The cost for the lunch is $9.00 per person.

"Know Your Own Backyard" Bus Tour, Thursday, January 28

A local bus tour lead by Paula Woods will leave Morton Community Center, Thursday, January 28 at 9:00 A.M. The tour will visit:
  • Don Stein's Red Crown Mini-Museum
  • The Tippecanoe County Public Library and The Tippecanoe County Historical Association's Library to learn about resources for local and regional history
  • Adelino's, Downtown Lafayette's new restaurant serving Mediterranean cuisine to enjoy the lunch buffet
  • Wolf Park in Battleground dedicated to research and education about wolves
The cost for the tour is $26.00 per person and includes lunch and entrance fees. Checks made out to WALLA should be sent to Paula Woods, 833 N. Chauncey Ave., West Lafayette, IN 47906.

Focus Group Planning Session, January 29

All interested WALLA attendees are invited to participate in a fun and lively planning session for future course offerings on Friday, January 29 from 9 A.M. until noon in Room 106 at the Morton Community Center.

The Focus Group Planning Session is sponsored by the WALLA Curriculum Committee. Bagels and beverages will be available.

Bring your ideas and suggestions for classes you would like to take or would consider coordinating.
