If you have participated in WALLA classes before and want to experience them again, or if you have never participated, join us for the annual pizza party on February 16 at 11:45 in the Morton Center Multipurpose Room. The class listings will be presented, as well as a summary of what you can expect from each class. Brochures will be available and sign up can be accomplished on that day. Brochures may also be mailed upon request. After the pizza party, a list of classes will appear on the WALLA website. However, registration is not available online. Classes will begin on March 19.
Cost for the pizza party is $9.00 and sign up information is available by contacting the WALLA office at 765 746 2006. Additional class registration information is available from Mary Gardner at 765 494 5760 or 800 359 2968.

WALLA and Friends January Movie

WALLA and Friends will present the movie, Potiche, on January 9 at the West Lafayette Library at 6:45.

It is a French comedy centering around Susanne Pujol, played by Catherine Deneuve. She is a typical trophy wife (potiche) and seems perfect as a wife and mother until life changes and she becomes a temporary CEO and takes up with a former lover. The public is welcome to attend and as always, attendance and popcorn is free.

Trip planned for January 27

WALLA will be taking a day- trip to Radio Station WBAA, C-Span archives, and Route 66 Diner on January 27. Please reserve the date, if this sounds like a trip you would be interested in attending. December 12 Movie at West Lafayette Library

A Friends of the Library-WALLA Monday Night Movie will be held on December 12, at 6:45 at the West Lafayette Library. The film to be shown is, Waking Sleeping Beauty. This film deals with the excellence of Walt Disney films in the decade (1984-1994). As always, the movie is open to the public and is free. Come and enjoy the movie and free popcorn.

Plan Ahead for the Winter Getaway Trip

The Winter Getaway is scheduled for February 29, March 1, and 2, 2012 at McCormick's Creek State Park. This year's film series will be based on the movie career of Barbara Stanwyck with three films and discussions that include; The Lady Eve, Double Indemnity and The Furie.

Two nights lodging, bus and films are included in the cost of the following choices:

Private room – 1 Queen bed $116 each

Double room - couple - 2 Queen beds $176 couple

Double room - shared - 2 Queen beds $88 each

Meals at the Inn are self-pay

The award winning movie,Gosford Park,will be presented at the West Lafayette Library on November 14 at 6:45. The movie is a mystery/comedy centered around a murder that occurs at the mansion of a wealthy British couple whose guests were invited for a weekend of hunting and relaxation. The guests' and the servants' perspectives are explored while attempting to solve the crime. As always, the movie and popcorn are free and the invitation to attend is open to the public. We hope to see you at the movie!

Class lists and registration forms are available at the WALLA office on the second floor of the Morton Center, 222 North Chauncey Avenue, West Lafayette, or by calling Mary Gardner at 765 494-5760 or 800 359-2968. The list of classes may be viewed online under the tab, "classes."

Registration cannot be completed online. Classes will be held from October 17 to November 10. A $60 fee allows you to register for up to 12 clases. There are 26 classes , 16 of which are mini courses.

October 10, Movie

Shall We Dansu? will be presented by WALLA and Friends at the West Lafayette Library at 6:45 on Monday, October 10. The 1996 movie was adapted for American audiences in 2004 as Shall We Dance? The movie is rated PG 13 and runs 136 minutes. The movie is open to the public and, as always, it is free.

Monday Night Movie Moved to Second Monday of the Month

WALLA and Friends will present the movie, The Conspirator on Monday, September 12, at 6:45 p.m. at the West Lafayette Public Library. In The Conspirator (2010), director Robert Redford presents the nineteenth-century military trial that held a dazed and grieving nation spellbound for well over a month. The trial in question was that of Mary Surratt, the only woman accused of participating in the plot to assassinate President Abraham Lincoln.

As always, the movie is free and the public is encouraged to attend. Please note the September 12 date which is consistent with WALLA and Friends new format of movies on the second Monday of the month.

Timekeepers will be provided by League of Women Voters.

Questions from the audience will be submitted on 3 x5 cards to be submitted for responses from mayoral candidates.

WALLA FALL CLASSES TO BE ANNOUNCED

Fall classes will be announced at the annual picnic at Columbian Park, on August 18 at 5 p.m.

Cost is $9.00 for a dinner of fried chicken, potato salad, veggie tray, bread, cookie and beverage.

In addition to enjoying dinner with friends, there will be the annual announcement of upcoming classes and an overview presentation. Brochures will be distributed for early sign-up.

Come Share The Fun of Viewing "Ponyo"

On June 20, WALLA and Friends will present the movie "Ponyo," at the West Lafayette Library. It is a Disney animated film, produced and directed by Hayao Miyazakii that has entertained and delighted adults as well as children. Roger Ebert uses the word, “magical” to describe the Japanese film based on "The Little Mermaid." It is a story about Sosuke, a 5-year-old, who finds a goldfish in a jar; Ponyo. He frees the fish and the fish heals Sosuke’s finger wound. Through that act, Ponyo gains the ability to change between being a fish or a human. Come share in this delightful movie. As always, it is open to the public and there is no charge.

A tour of the Wabash and Erie Canal in Delphi is planned for Thursday, July 14. Participants will ride on a replica of a century old canal boat, pedal a surrey or hike on tow paths, visit the Delphi Opera House and Gallery and the Historical Museum. The trip will include bus transportation and a catered lunch. The bus will leave from Morton Center at 9:30 a.m. and return around 4:30. The cost is $40 ea. May 2 Movie

It is a movie about two Brazilian teenagers whose passion and talent for ballet also offers them potential for rising out of the slums of Rio de Janeiro. Benefit Dart Tournament

A benefit dart tournament to help defray medical expenses of Randy Nelson, WALLA President, is being held at the Lafayette Moose Lodge 1529, 3601 Union Street in Lafayette. Randy is currently battling lung cancer. The Blind Draw Double Elimination tournament will take place April 30. Sign up is at 5:30 with throwing at 6:30. Awards will be presented to the top 3 winners. There will also be open auctions, 50/50 and children activities planned. There is a $5.00 registration fee.

April 4 WALLA and Friends Film

WALLA and Friends will present the film, “The Secret in Their Eyes,” at the West Lafayette Public Library on Monday, April 4, at 6:45. This 2010 Academy Award winner is subtitled in English and is for mature audiences only. In this movie, Benjamin Esposito, retires and draws on his former court employee experience by writing a novel about an investigation into the rape and murder of a young woman. The film is free and open to the mature public.

Tuesday, March 29, starting at 11:45, Stanton Lambert, Executive Director of the Wabash River Enhancement Corporation, will give a presentation on the recently completed corridor master plans for the Lafayette/West Lafayette urban section and the Tippecanoe County rural section of the Wabash River Corridor. He will also provide a brief overview of enhancement of the Wabash River corridor. This luncheon program will take place in the Morton Community Center. Luncheon cost is $9 and reservations can be made with Mary Gardner or Gail Beck until the Thursday prior to the luncheon.

Another Special Event Box Lunch will be held on Wednesday, April 6,at 11:45 at Morton Community Center. Coleen Hamrick, CASA Director,will speak about "How Advocates Assist Abused and Neglected Children.” CASA volunteers are community volunteers who are trained to speak up for the rights of children. Come learn about the needs in our community and how Tippecanoe County CASA volunteers make an impact on our community's most vulnerable children. Township Government: What It Is and Why It Matters will be presented Thursday, March 24, 2011 at 11:45 a.m. at the Morton Community Center auditorium. This presentation is co-sponsored by the League of Women Voters of Greater Lafayette with WALLA. Township structure, trustee duties and the financial picture in Tippecanoe County's thirteen townships will be discussed. The League will share conclusions and recommendations based on an eighteen-month study of township government.

This will be a brown bag lunch hour presentation. Hot drinks will be available. Free and open to the public.

Art Show

March 1-April 15 2011 will be an art show, displayed in

various areas of the West Lafayette Public Library.

WALLA members are encouraged to bring their artwork to the

library anytime during library hours, March 1 – March 5, 2011.

This year’s show will feature artwork by the WALLA community

in a wide range of media including wood turnings and carvings,

fabric art, pastels, oils, photography, glass, and pottery.

A reception introducing the art show will be held at the library

on Monday, March 7, 2011, at 6:00 p.m.,

Pizza Party and Announcement of Spring Classes

Wabash Area Lifetime Learning Association and the League of Women Voters are again presenting the Indiana State Legislative Candidates Forum, September 15 from 7-9 p.m in the Multi-purpose Room of the Morton Community Center. Jeff Smith, of Channel 18 News, will moderate and explain forum procedure. State Senate candidates in District 22; Ron Alting and Michael Oxenrider, State Representative candidates for District 27; Sheila Klinker and Donn Brown, and State Representative candidates for District 25; Randy Truitt and Paul Roales, as well as Tim Brown candidate for State Representative in District 41 will participate.

History, Art, and Popcorn in Zionsville & Edinburgh, July 27, 2010

The WALLA Program Committee has planned a fun summer bus trip for Tuesday, July 27.

You'll ride in an air-conditioned bus to two interesting Indiana towns: Zionsville and Edinburgh. The bus will leave Morton Center at 8:30 a.m. and will return at approximately 5:45 p.m.

The cost is $65 per person which includes transportation, lunch, entrance fees, and a bottle of chilled water.

Take along a bag for souvenirs, art and antiques, gourmet chocolates, amazing popcorn, and whatever else may strike your fancy.

Shady Side of Lafayette Tour, May 20, 2010

A WALLA bus tour to former Lafayette-area sites of gaming, gambling, speakeasies, "Ladies of the Evening", and a possible Dillinger hangout will depart from Morton Community Center at 9:30 A.M. on Thursday, May 20th .

Lunch will be at one of the known gambling sites. There will also be a visit to the Wildcat Creek Winery for a short tour and tasting.

The cost of this day-long bus tour, led by Paula Woods, is $35 per person; lunch is included.

Old Railroads! Old Farms! Another WALLA Adventure!, June 8 - June 10, 2010

A spring bus trip to Illinois and Wisconsin is being offered by the WALLA Programming Committee. A few of the sites the group will visit: Illinois railroad museum and parks, Illinois-Michigan canal, Old World Wisconsin State Park depicting Danish, Finnish, German, Norwegian and African vintage farms, Tempel Lippizan stables in Illinois, and the Monon Connection railroad museum in Monon, Indiana.

We will stay at the Harbor Shores Hotel in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin. Restaurants on the itinerary include: Chapin's Restaurant in Morris, Illinois, Mader's Famous German Restaurant in Milwaukee, and the Whistlestop Restaurant in Monon, Indiana.

The bus will leave from Morton Center on Tuesday, June 8 and return to West Lafayette, Wednesday, June 10. The cost for this WALLA adventure is $300 per person for double occupancy (add $78 for single supplement). This includes transportation, meals, and admissions. The registration deadline is May 1. Submit your artwork for the WALLA Art Exhibit which will be displayed at the West Lafayette Public Library throughout the month of April. Blythe Lee or Nancy Hartman at the library will accept your pieces between March 25 to March 30. Two-dimensional items must be ready to hang.

WALLA is organizing a group event to attend the musical comedy, Church Basement Ladies, Saturday, February 27, 2:30 P.M. at Long Theater. A professional touring company will be performing and the main floor tickets are $27.00.

"Know Your Own Backyard" Bus Tour, Thursday, January 28

A local bus tour lead by Paula Woods will leave Morton Community Center, Thursday, January 28 at 9:00 A.M. The tour will visit:

Don Stein's Red Crown Mini-Museum
The Tippecanoe County Public Library and The Tippecanoe County Historical Association's Library to learn about resources for local and regional history
Adelino's, Downtown Lafayette's new restaurant serving Mediterranean cuisine to enjoy the lunch buffet
Wolf Park in Battleground dedicated to research and education about wolves

The cost for the tour is $26.00 per person and includes lunch and entrance fees. Checks made out to WALLA should be sent to Paula Woods, 833 N. Chauncey Ave., West Lafayette, IN 47906.

Focus Group Planning Session, January 29

WALLA Winter Get-A-Way, February 23-25, 2010

Join WALLA at the Spring Mill State Park Tuesday, February 23 to Thursday, February 25 for a relaxing three days of fun, food, and films featuring Marilyn Monroe!

Cost per person is $150 for a private room or $110 for a room for two with two double beds. The cost includes round-trip bus transportation and two nights in the Inn.

Meals at the Inn and at Jeeves & Co. in Scottsburg, IN on the way home are not included in the cost for the trip.

Payment and reservations are due by January 15, 2010. Reservation forms are available in the WALLA office.

Cancellations for full refund must be made by February 3, 2010.

The cost for the bus, lunch, and show is $48.00 per person.

The bus will leave Morton Center at 11:00 A.M. Park on the north end of the lot; bus pick-up in front of the building.

WALLA Box Lunches with Guest Speakers

This Fall's Box Lunches will be on Tuesday, October 27, 11:45 a.m. and Wednesday, November 4, 11:45 a.m in the Morton Community Center All-purpose Room.

The speaker for the October 27 Box Lunch is Dennis A. Savaiano, Purdue University Dean of the College of Consumer and Family Sciences (CFS) and Professor of Foods & Nutrition. He will speak about CFS: People, Possibilities, and Partnerships.

The speaker for the November 4 Box Lunch is Don Stein, local businessman and entrepreneur whose avocation is restoring antique automobiles. He will speak about Collecting Antique Automobiles.

The generously filled Box Lunches catered by Jane's Deli are $9.00 per person and must be ordered by the Thursday prior to each Box Lunch event. Check out the sandwich choices in the WALLA Fall 2009 Class Brochure (for a downloadable form, see CLASSES, page 14 on the website). Also there will be sign-up forms available during WALLA classes.

Southern Indiana Winery Trip, October 30

Join the WALLA bus trip Friday, October 30 to visit the Oliver, Butler, and Mallow Run wineries located in the Bloomington and Indianapolis areas.

We will tour these exceptional wineries, taste the wines, and have an opportunity to visit the gift shops, as well as, buy wine to take home, if desired. Lunch is included.

The bus will leave Morton Community Center promptly at 8:30 a.m. and return at approximately 5:30 p.m. Parking is available in the Morton Center parking lot.

Picnic in the Park

The picnic is scheduled for Thursday, August 20, at 5 p.m. As in previous years the Blue Shelter number 5 in Columbian Park has been reserved. It is close to Park Street with parking available along Park Street and near Jenks' Rest. Restrooms are available at Jenks' Rest.
